Description
Half Moon cast iron plate for Kamado 23.5″ is one of the most versatile accessories for a ceramic grill. Unlike a traditional cooking grate, the plate provides a solid contact surface that makes it possible to prepare small, delicate foods or ingredients with a higher fat or liquid content.
The Half Moon design covers only half of the Kamado cooking area. The other half can remain fitted with the traditional grate or another accessory, creating two different cooking zones at the same time. This is one of the key advantages of Half Moon systems for Kamado grills.
🔄 2 surfaces in one accessory
One of the main advantages of this type of plate is its reversible construction.
Flat side
The smooth surface works essentially as a plancha.
It is excellent for:
🍳 eggs
🥓 bacon
🍔 smash burgers
🐟 fish
🍤 shrimp and seafood
🥦 vegetables
🧅 onions
🍄 mushrooms
🥞 pancakes
🧀 delicate foods
The solid surface prevents small ingredients from falling through the cooking grate.
Ribbed side
The other side features raised ribs and is suitable for:
🥩 steaks
🍔 burgers
🍖 chops
🍗 chicken
🌭 sausages
🥦 grilled vegetables
This flat + ribbed configuration is also confirmed for reversible Half Moon cast iron plates designed for Kamado 23.5″ grills.
🍔 Perfect for Smash Burgers
This is a very strong commercial benefit.
A traditional cooking grate is not ideal for making a proper smash burger, because this technique requires almost complete contact between the meat and a very hot cooking surface.
The flat side of the cast iron plate allows the burger to be pressed directly onto the heated surface.
Cast iron stores thermal energy extremely well, while the large contact area with the meat promotes intense browning.
Kamado + hot cast iron + flat surface = an excellent setup for Smash Burgers.
🥩 Ideal for steaks
For steaks, the ribbed side can be used.
Cast iron offers excellent heat retention, allowing it to maintain a high temperature even after meat is placed on the surface. This is one of the main advantages of Half Moon cast iron plates.
This can help achieve:
✔ intense searing;
✔ a well-developed crust;
✔ defined grill marks;
✔ strong heat transfer.
🐟 Excellent for fish and seafood
This is another area where the plate has a clear advantage over a conventional grate.
Delicate fish, shrimp and other seafood can be difficult to cook directly on open grate bars.
The flat side can be used for:
🐟 salmon fillets
🐟 sea bream fillets
🍤 shrimp
🦑 squid
🐚 seafood
Small pieces cannot fall between the grate bars, while the solid surface provides better control over cooking.
🥓 Breakfast directly on the Kamado
The plate can also turn the Kamado into a true outdoor griddle.
The flat surface can be used to prepare:
🍳 eggs
🥓 bacon
🥞 pancakes
🍅 tomatoes
🍄 mushrooms
🥔 potatoes
Reversible Half Moon plates are also well suited to foods such as eggs, pancakes and bacon.
🌓 The Half Moon system advantage
The semicircular shape allows a highly practical configuration:
½ cast iron plate + ½ cooking grate
For example:
On the plate: smash burgers, onions and bacon.
On the grate: meat, sausages or vegetables.
Or:
½ cast iron plate = direct cooking
½ zone with heat deflector = indirect cooking
This makes the Kamado considerably more flexible than when the entire cooking area is covered by a single type of grate.

* Compatibility note: 23.5″ refers to the Kamado size class and does not necessarily represent the actual diameter of the plate. Half Moon accessories for 23/23.5″ Kamado grills may have diameters or widths of approximately 49.5–52 cm, depending on the manufacturer and internal cooking system.
If the exact dimensions of the specific plate are known, they should be listed separately rather than inferred from the “Kamado 23.5″” designation.
Half Moon Plate vs Half Moon Grate
It is important to distinguish these two products on the website, especially because both accessories are now available.
The Half Moon cast iron grate has open bars and is primarily intended for steaks, meat and traditional BBQ cooking.
The Half Moon cast iron plate provides a solid cooking surface and is much more versatile for smash burgers, fish, seafood, vegetables, eggs, bacon and other small ingredients.
Ideally, a Kamado owner can have both accessories and combine them depending on what is being cooked.
Cast iron care
For maximum service life:
✔ preheat the plate gradually;
✔ avoid thermal shock;
✔ do not pour cold water over hot cast iron;
✔ remove food residue after use;
✔ dry the surface completely before storage;
✔ periodically apply a very thin layer of cooking oil;
✔ store the accessory in a dry place.
Hand washing is recommended for Half Moon cast iron plates. Dishwasher cleaning and prolonged soaking should also be avoided for this type of cast iron accessory.
